For My Sweet Friend…Charissa......Who Knows the Morel Madness.......Illinois Insanity
April 5, 2009
Conditions are looking great for the upcoming morel frenzy in Central Illinois and the rest of "Moreldom" also. Locally, we've had ample winter snows and, more importantly, plenty of rain in March. In fact, the Illinois River and others have been at flood stage for the past two weeks! Anytime we have floods in March, we see an overwhelming bumper crop of morels in the river bottoms in late April/early May. Of course that's if the water level drops before late April. Those of you that hunt the bottom lands should do well. There is a drawback or two in that those morels can sometimes be a little gritty. And, remember that morels absorb their environment. If your rivers are polluted, the morels may be also. Our overnight temperatures are still predicted to be in the 30's and 40's for at least the next ten days and there is snow predicted for April 6, I'm predicting that I'll find my first morel of the season on April 20. I'll be hunting in Southern Illinois and Southern Indiana from April 21 through 24 and report from the field.
In other news, Choice Productions has decided to cancel the Illinois State Morel Mushroom Hunting Championship for 2009. They lost two major sponsors due to the economy and their insurance rates doubled even though they've not had any claims. We're sorry for the cancellation, but we understand. Hopefully they can find some corporate support and bring it back in 2010.
Morel Mania, Inc. will have an alternate event on that first Saturday of May. We're calling it "Morel University". The emphasis will be on learning how to find morels. We'll divide into groups of ten with one " Morel Professor" leading and teaching each group. We only have room for 60 students and already have 28 signed up. If you're interested, let us know soon before it's too late.Click here to check out Morel University!
I'm very excited about a new book just published. "Edible Wild Mushrooms of Illinois and Surrounding States" by Joe McFarland and Gregory M. Mueller. Joe is an outdoor writer for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. He is usually the first to report from Illinois on the Sightings Page. Gregory M. Mueller was the curator of fungi at the Field Museum of Natural History for over twenty-three years and is now Vice President for Science and Academic Programs at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Vicky and I were given the opportunity to read an advance copy. Our comments appear on the back cover of the book, "Finally! This is the mushroom book we've all been waiting for. Any mushroom hunter in the Midwest will find it incredible. If we owned only one mushroom book, this would be it." We'll have it in the book section of our catalog page within the week. Call me if you wish to order in advance - 309-364-3319.
We will be attending the Mansfield, Indiana Mushroom Festival on April 25 and 26 and The National Morel Mushroom Festival in Boyne City, Michigan from May 14 through 17. Stop at our booth and chat awhile.
Finally, a little advertising for our new products:
We've re-designed our Roons Rain Gauge and added an Instant Morel Garden.
We've also created two new styles of our Roon Rods.
Our entire catalog begins .
We won't be able to print and mail our catalog for the foreseeable future. The cost of printing and mailing are phenomenal, as in "we'd have to raise our prices". And the amount of time it takes to prepare it is just not available. We're still working on getting it in pdf form so it could be printed in page form from your computer, but just haven't had time.
Thanks to everyone for your reports to the "Sightings Page". We obviously couldn't do it without you. Our total website had over 5.4 million hits during the months of April and May in 2008!
President Barack Obama:
For the first time in our nation's history, Congress has passed comprehensive health care reform. America waited a hundred years and fought for decades to reach this moment. Tonight we are finally here.
Consider the staggering scope of what we have just accomplished:
Every American will finally be guaranteed high quality, affordable health care coverage.
Every American will be covered under the toughest patient protections in history. Arbitrary premium hikes, insurance cancellations, and discrimination against pre-existing conditions will now be gone forever.
And we'll finally start reducing the cost of care -- creating millions of jobs, preventing families and businesses from plunging into bankruptcy, and removing over a trillion dollars of debt from the backs of our children.
But the victory that matters most tonight goes beyond the laws and far past the numbers.
It is the peace of mind enjoyed by every American, no longer one injury or illness away from catastrophe.
It is the workers and entrepreneurs who are now freed to pursue their slice of the American dream without fear of losing coverage or facing a crippling bill.
And it is the immeasurable joy of families in every part of this great nation, living happier, healthier lives together because they can finally receive the vital care they need.
